Ilja is main subject teacher and bigband leader at Rotterdam Conservatory, Codarts, since 1996.

Together with Bert Boeren (The Netherlands), Andy Hunter (USA) and Shannon Barnett, Ilja set up a new system of teaching. The principles of 1 student combined with 1 teacher has been abandoned. The new idea is teaching by a team of carefully chosen teachers who work together extensively. This idea has been developed to cover fields as divers as jazz, as well as pop and world music. The way this three trombonists teach is based on their philosophy of putting all music-styles, information and `forces’ together, instead of separating them.

Ilja is main-subject-teacher (25%) and bigband leader at the .Amsterdam Conservatory  (CvA). The team in Amsterdam consist of Bert Boeren and Martijn Sohier. Ilja and Johan Plomp take care of the two big bands of the conservatory.
